DESCRIPTION:
Just as importantly, the book presents a variety of theological readings of specific texts: Exodus 3; Isaiah 52-53; Matthew 5-7, and Romans 9-11. Four or five readings are devoted to each text, including examples of patristic, medieval and Reformation interpretation, as well as contemporary readings. From the Back Cover This book introduces students to the practice of reading scripture theologically and shows how explicitly theological concerns can be brought to bear on the interpretation of scripture. While the volume offers some methodological essays, it does not lay out a single method; it points to the variety of questions that can and have been raised about interpreting scripture theologically. Rather than presenting a unified perspective on each text, these essays introduce readers to theological interpretation by presenting concrete examples of ways in which it is and has been done.
His previous books include The Story of Christ in the Ethics of Paul and Reading in Communion (with L. Gregory Jones). "Both avant-garde and orthodox" according to Wes J. Arblaster. Fowl's work includes contributors who engage in diverse forms of biblical interpretation, yet who hold in common the ability to move beyond the "critical" exegesis which has so dominated biblical interpretation these last centuries. This compilation, representing both pre and postmodernity, speaks to a movement that is both traditional and progressive, orthodox and avant-garde. As such this work is "prophetic" in the double sense of the term: heralding the coming of something new, and calling us back to what has gone before.. A Customer said Run, don't walk!. Run away from this book! Don't Walk!! Do whatever you can to avoid reading this book. Makes an excellent paperweight.. "Disappointed" according to Marjorie J.Boyden-Edmonds. I am doing a Masters in Divinity, I had ordered this book as, "used", first I got the wrong book from thrift book and later was told I had to reorder because they did not have the book in book. This was after several weeks of waiting.
