The stream-of-consciousness narrative told by a large number of characters is fairly easy to get used to. Especially with a chapter that consists of four words: "my mother is a fish."So for anyone wanting to dip their toes into some of the most challenging and greatest books in the English language, I'd suggest reading this one before tackling "The Sound and the Fury" and "Absalom Absalom" (in that order). "Dying" would be a great introduction to the style that is put on steroids in the latter books. Just realize that it is happening in the present day with flashbacks based off of different reminders. Who is Benji's caretaker will allow you to figure out when the flashbacks are taking place.. You know exactly what this means, how wonderful it is to the senses and the almost-haunting, hazy memories it stirs in you of people long in your past or passed on.
