Not your run of the mill romance Not your run of the mill romance 4.5 stars Georgia Blue I believe The Shadow and the Star is the kind of romance you will either find thrilling or you will roll your eyes at it. For me, although parts were a little uneven, as a whole I bought into the story, and it worked for me. Samuel was such a complex character: sexually abused as a child, ashamed and proud, lonely, living in fear of ever disappointing his foster family, yet also strong, disciplined, and smart. He encounters perfectly proper, genteely impoverished dressmaker Leda, and circumstances . .5 stars I believe The Shadow and the Star is the kind of romance you will either find thrilling or you will roll your eyes at it. The emotions of the couple are subdued and I kept turning the pages waiting for at least to break loose and they never really do that to my satisfaction. They make a couple of confessions at the end that fixes everything and that's it. I was intrigued by the story bur so disappointed in the end.. Very Unusual; Tormented hero; Different locale This is one of those books that remain in your thoughts long after you are done reading it. Samuel's past life of abuse is told through a series of flashbacks as the story begins to weave Leda into his present. Although disturbing, it is not told graphically and you are left to fill in the sad blanks in your own imagination. You wonder at the mystery of Lady Tess. Who is she to Samuel? In the present, Samuel rescues Leda from a life of destitution. Meeting briefly when she worked for a seamstress, L
