Moses, the weak link in the information chain, wants to tell all, but the others vote no. Then Moses’ beautiful 23-year-old daughter is raped, the rapist is murdered, and Moses emerges as the prime suspect. Memories of the so-called Dockside Massacre (The First Law, 2002) remain fresh, however, even six years after the fact, and when a reporter starts digging into the circumstances of the unsolved case, Diz, Abe, and, especially, volatile Moses McGuire, Diz’s brother-in-law, get a tad nervous. Did he do it? Just as troubling is whether, under pressure of prosecution, he’ll tell what happened on the pier that night. Courtoom dynamics are as well done as
But at what price? For the first time since 2009, Dismas Hardy, the author’s most beloved protagonist, returns in a masterful novel that showcases Lescroart’s extraordinary story-telling gifts: a cast of flesh-and-blood characters, morally complex situations, and relentless, nail-biting suspense.. Making things even more complicated, McGuire has fallen off the wagon, and his stay in prison could bring to light old secrets that would destroy Hardy and his closest colleagues’ careers. Within twenty-four hours, Rick Jessup is dead, Moses McGuire is the prime suspect in the investigation, and Dismas Hardy has been hired to defend his brother-in-law. Moses McGuire has good reason to be concerned about his beautiful twenty-three-year-old daughter, Brittany. She moves quickly from one boyfriend to the next, and always seems to prefer a new and mysterious stranger to a man she knows something about. As the overwhelming evidence against McGuire piles up, Dismas Hardy focuses on planting doubt in the minds of the jurors—until, in a feat of legal ingenuity that is staggering in both its implications and its simplicity, Hardy sees a new way f
DO NOT make this your first Lescroart novel I am a big fan of Lescroart's work, and the Dismas Hardy series in particular. I'm okay with the books that focused more on Wes Farrell, Abe Glitsky, Wyatt Hunt and Gina Roake, but the Hardy character is the center of Lescroart's fictional version of San Francisco. Always good to see him back in action. In the Ophelia Cut, Lescroart takes a huge risk (you won't realize it until you get to the end, but trust me on that assessment). This time out, the suspect is Hardy's own brother-in-law, Moses McGuire, and the case threatens to open a huge can of worms for tho. John Lescroart is one of the best writers we have sonya w John Lescroart is one of the best writers we have, although his publishers, like so many today, Skimp on the quality of the print. I gave him only a three because he killed off one of the key characters in the series. First he denigrated the man's character, coming up with things that had never been mentioned before in the series, and then killed him off. This was a main, beloved character who was part of the series in every book about it from the beginning. I think Mr.Lescroart could have done better.. "Too Much Filler" according to Coffeelover. I was disappointed in this Lescroart novel. Much too verbose. It seemed like there was more padding and repetition than actual character development and plot. It took the author a very long time to wrap things up. Not my favorite Lescroart work by any measure.
