Exquisite! This was an amazing peace! The translation was extremely well done. It kept true to Chaucer's original text, yet kept in time and rhyme scheme for the modern English translation. The fact that the original text is included on the opposite page as the translation, it allows you to see and even read the story the way Chaucer originally wrote it. If you have the time to work on y. Fine Well, it was allegorical. Starting off with a solid forward by Bernard O'Donoghue, this fun short tale by this medieval writer kicks off. It involvers a dreamer and his dream, without going into details themselves as I am not an expert in the field of poetry.However, two key features make this thin volume worth the purchase:1) It has the old English on one page and the translation opposite it;2) the tr. "it was perfectly adequate" according to Allen Berry. Everything was beautiful and nothing hurt. That is what I'm going to say about this book to meet the word limit.
The story tells of how Ceyx lost his life at sea, and how Alcyone, his wife, mourned his absence. The deceased Ceyx instructs Alcyone to bury him and to cease her sorrow, and when Alcyone opens her eyes Ceyx has gone. Morpheus finds the drowned Ceyx and bears him to Alcyone three hours before dawn. At the beginning of the poem, the sleepless poet lies in bed, reading a book. He states that his dream is so full of wonder that no man may interpret it correctly. The Book of the Duchess, also known as The Deth of Blaunche is the earliest of Chaucer’s major poems, preceded only by his short poem, ”An ABC,” and possibly by his translation of The Romaunt of the Rose. Unsure of his fate, she prays to the goddess Juno to send her a dream vision. The messenger finds Morpheus and relays Juno’s orders. Lost in the book and his thoughts, the poet suddenly falls asleep with the book in his hands. Most sources put the date of composition after 12 September 1368 (when Blanche of Lancaster died) and 1372, with many recent studies privileging a date as early as the end of 1368.
