On the plus side, I kept turning pages to see what would happen in spite of the plot being rather rambling and somehow overly self-indulgent. Mr. Wilson would do well to read Ross MacDonald and learn more about crisp plotting. It is amazing to me that the seemingly two-dimensional Lew Archer feels like a real human being while Charles Boxer remains a cardboard cut-out, likable yes, but somehow not real.Mr. Wilson seems to want to write both a pot-boiler thriller (nothing wrong with that) and novel that explores themes such as ambiguity, ambivalence, an.
