DESCRIPTION:

"A poignant piece of literature" according to Olie Cora Bibi Gnagno. When I first picked up "Singing Our Song in a Strange Land," I was blown away by the way the novel opened. The story of the young boy getting tortured captured my attention and was a sign of what was to come. The story is well told as it intertwines the plight of African-Americans in the U.S as well as the protagonist's experience in her personal life. The author's command of language is evident as she paints a vivid picture of the past and the c. much like when I read Toni Morrison's works Donna A timely story! much like when I read Toni Morrison's works, I found myself easily identifying with the protagonist's views on family, relationships and dedication to the African American community. Beautifully written to show how events in our ancestral past very much affects who we are and how we love. I highly recommend this book.

In this debut novel, Furaha Youngblood, author of a volume of poetry, Cat-Eyed Woman From Louisiana, concisely, but passionately chronicles the extraordinary journey of an ordinary woman in her quest to reinstate her people into their rightful place as members of the human family. As a descendant of the only people ever legally held in slavery on American soil, she is involuntarily thrust onto her path by the combined circumstances of a problematic marriage, and the savage assault on an adolescent uncle, years before she was born.Despite the thousands of sorrow songs that tell of a brutal oppression, there are, however, other songs that not only defy the distorted images of a captive people, but also celebrate their resilience, and love of themselves, despite unrelenting efforts to dehumanize them. You can hear them if you listen with your heart.
