"Fantastic adventure!" according to Robert Pajor. Joshua Slocum was the first person to sail around the world. In this book he tells about his voyage. Joshua Slocums story is very entertaining to read. He writes about the practical and technical challenges of long distance sailing in the 19th century and about his encounters with the peoples and tribes on his route. The writing style is short and factual, but that almost makes the impression even stronger given that more often than not Joshua Slocum had to face death and only escaped with the narrowest of margins. Some people complained about the text being small in the other edition, but it seems that Amazon shares reviews for a book across all editions, so it was hard to tell which book had bigger type. I've been on somewhat of an adventure mode lately with all the Shackleton books, modern sailing travels and rescues, Everest, etc., but this one is worth reading because Slocum was one of the "original" adventurers. He downplays his skill, but with little more than dead reckoning, he manages to find little islands in the
. CAPTAIN JOSHUA SLOCUM (1844-1909) was the first person to circle the globe alone entirely by sea. This remarkable achievement made Slocum the most famous North American sailor of all time. On April 24, 1895, he departed Boston in his thirty-seven-foot sloop, Spray, and sailed around the world, returning to Newport, Rhode Island, on June 27, 1898
His almost matter-of-fact descriptions of hazardous episodes and his colorful, often witty observations make this book perhaps the most delightful and absorbing adventure tale in history. This edition (complete with all of the original Thomas Fogarty illustrations) of Captain Slocum's story will prove as enjoyable and thrilling to the present generation of Americans as it was to our fathers and grandfathers.. It has been reprinted several times and has even been required reading in many schools. In Samoa, he was visited by Mrs. "The classic of its kind." —Travel World"One of the most readable books in the whole library of adventure." —Sports Illustra
