DESCRIPTION:

Good introductory reference text Macaron42 I am a 2nd year graduate student with a project in scintillator research--a field that is entirely new to me (my background is chemical engineering). I first started with the Knoll and Gilmore texts, but being entirely new to the field, I needed something much more basic. I found this text to be useful as a reference and as a quick review of major concepts related to scintillation. It contains black and white diagrams and plots that are somewhat useful, and it also contains . Passable as a reference, but very, very raw. Guitar Tech Will definitely NOT recommend as a course guide or a first-time read As an inexpensive quick reference at the edge of the desk, maybe OK. Lots of stuff just pulled from other resources with minimal adaptation, and sometimes not really thought through and a bit out of place. The author did not really break much sweat making it better (yet?).. "PLEASE find a copy editor for this book!" according to Paul Nienaber SJ. I teach a course in radiation physics for nuclear medicine workers, and my research in in particle detection. I was attracted to this book as background material, a more contemporary exploration of radiation detection. A specific example topic was optical stimulated luminescence (OSL) dosimetry, which is replacing thermoluminescent dosimetry (TLD).The book casts a wide net, but I'm not sure about the value of the haul. Coverage starts with basic concepts (radioactivity, radi

. Currently he is working at Laurentian University/Penguin ASI Inc. He holds degrees of Masters in Physics, Masters in Nuclear Engineering, and PhD in Physics. Apart from research and development, Dr. Ahmed has several years of extensive practical experience in the field of radiation detection and measurement. Ahmed is a Chartered Scientist and a Chartered Physicist of the Institute of Phys

Clearly written and starting at a level accessible also to undergraduates, this book is for all reader levels in physics and engineering." SUMMING UP: Recommended. Lower-division undergraduates through professionals; two-year technical program students. "Ahmed's book offers the most thorough treatment of the field that this reviewer has encountered so far. Extensive bibliographics at chapter ends will satisfy researcher who need to delve deeper into certain subjects. Adding to the book's thoroughness are chapters on radiaion dosimetry and protection as well as one on data acquisition systems, which includes all modern standards used in the field. -- U. Worked examples are interspersed liberally throughout and, together with the chapter problems, make this a good teaching resource. Greife, Colorado School of Mines, CHOICE, OCtober 2007 . It covers the origins and properties of different kinds of ionizing radiation, their detection and measurement, and the procedures used to protect people and the environment from their potentially harmful effects. This book presents an overview of the physics of radiation detection and its applications. With abundance of worked-out examples and end-of-chapter problems, this book enables the reader to understand the underlying physical principles and their applications. Detailed discussions on different detection media, such as gases, liquids, liquefied gases, semiconductors, and scintillators make this book an excellent source of information for students as well as professionals working in related fields. * Covers the modern techniques involved in detection and measurement of radiation and the underlying physical principles * Illustrates theoretical and practical details with an abundance of practical, worked-out examples * Provides practice problems at the end of each chapter. It provides useful formulae and explains methodologies to solve problems related to radiation measurements. It details the experimental techniques and instrumentation used in different detection systems in a very practical way without sacrificing the physics content. Chapters on statistics, data ana
