Sleaze, violence , and crime always a winning combination Last Days of American Crime is full of sleaze. Fortunately, I love sleaze. In the early going, random crack whores make random appearances performing random nasty acts (by which I mean, really pleasurable acts) on guys who are feeding their addictions. A key character in the story, Shelby, rarely appears without provocative clothing and often appears with no clothing. That earns a bunch of stars right there.Ah, but is there a plot, you ask? In fact, there is. The country is besieged by lawlessness and something approaching anarchy but the American Peace Initiative (API) is just two weeks away. The API involves some sort of broad. C. D. Varn said Noir, sleaze, and API. This is interesting mix of LA-stype crime Noir with a near future science fiction premise that mostly works. The ultra-violence is somewhat typical and under-explained, and the science fiction premise is under-utilized, but the sleaze and air works well. Rick Remender's dialogue, while not terribly original, reads really well and pops with one-liners. The characters are mostly likable, although the Shelby, "the femme fatale," isn't particularly believable as a hacker. Elements of the premise are interesting: people running to Canada and Mexico, who close their borders, because fear of the new limitations imposed, and the sort of. A slightly futuristic story with lots of old-fashioned noir grit 'The Last Days of American Crime' by Rick Remender tells of a future where the US decides to eliminate crime, but the story is pure, old-fashioned crime noir all the way.Graham Bricke is a down and out criminal with a good enough reason to make a last score. He's got an inside scoop and a plan on a heist that will make the folks clever enough to pull it off wealthy. He just needs to find people he can trust with the skills he needs.
