And just as the Jewish people experienced a miracle with their holy lamp, so too do these boys. Ages 5-up. Levine's uplifting story--which reads like a folktale--is an admirable blend of religion and history that juxtaposes the tribulations of Benjamin and Moses with a retelling of the Hanukkah story. Ransome's richly textured oil paintings, though occasionally less than successful in depicting facial expressions, capture the underlying sadness while illuminating the story's themes of strong brotherly love and enduring faith. Full-color illustrations.. With only a battered old lamp for comfort--and a single night's worth of oil--they try to keep up their spirits by telling the story of Hanukkah. On a dark December morning, Moses and Benjamin begin their escape from Russia to Palestine. And, when that night finally comes, they light the old lamp, and hope for a miracle
A Customer said Get this book. I have to give this book a good review -- it's an excellent Hanukkah story for children of any age. But I also have to admit I'm a bit biased -- my brother and I were the "models" for this book. I'm the older brother in the story, and my brother was the younger one. But from the deck of their ship, they consider the stars in the December night sky as their lights on this particular Festival of Lights. My kids especially enjoyed this book when they were little.. Shevi said A lovely Hanukkah story about two brothers fleeing from Russian oppression. Russian soldiers have been attacking the Jewish village of Drahitchen. A few days before Hanukkah, Moses and Benjamin's older brother sends their mother enough money for the two younger boys to join him in British Mandate Palestine. Mother packs their bags and gives them a little brass lamp with the tiniest bit of oil so they can at least say the blessing over the Hanukkah lights once. But there are many dangers along the way. Will they make it? And what will happen when their tiny lamp runs out of oil?I bought this book for two reasons: I l
